Freudenberg Unveils Advanced High-Pressure Sealing Technology

German sealing specialist Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has introduced a new high
performance elastomer sealing solution designed specifically for next-generation electric
vehicle (EV) air-conditioning compressors operating with R744 (CO2) refrigerant systems.
The newly developed sealing technology is engineered to withstand operating pressures
exceeding 100 bar, addressing one of the key technical challenges associated with the
growing adoption of CO2-based thermal management systems in electric mobility
applications.
As global automotive manufacturers increasingly shift toward environmentally friendly
refrigerants, R744 refrigerant systems are gaining attention due to their ultra-low global
warming potential (GWP) and compliance with tightening international environmental
regulations. However, the significantly higher operating pressures of CO2 systems place
substantial demands on compressor sealing materials and long-term reliability.
Freudenberg stated that its latest elastomer-based sealing system has been specifically
optimized for the harsh operating conditions found in electric compressor applications,
including rapid temperature fluctuations, high rotational speeds, and elevated pressure
loads common in modern EV thermal management architectures.
The company noted that the new sealing solution offers improved resistance to
chemical exposure, enhanced durability, and lower leakage rates compared to
conventional sealing materials. These characteristics are expected to support longer
compressor service life, improved system efficiency, and reduced maintenance
requirements for vehicle manufacturers and end users alike.

The development aligns with the automotive industry's accelerating transition toward
more sustainable cooling technologies and integrated thermal management systems,
which are becoming increasingly important for battery performance, charging efficiency,
and cabin comfort in electric vehicles.
Industry analysts believe high-pressure CO2 compressor technologies will play a growing
role in future EV platforms, particularly as automakers seek alternatives to traditional
synthetic refrigerants while maintaining high energy efficiency standards.
With this launch, Freudenberg further strengthens its position in the rapidly evolving e
mobility supply chain, where advanced sealing technologies are becoming critical
components for next-generation electric drivetrain and thermal management systems.
