India Relaxes Compressor Import Restrictions Until March 2027

According to Electronics Buzz released on May 11, 2026, India's Department for Promotion
of Industry and Internal Trade has officially rolled out the Quality Control Amendment
Order 2026, introducing major adjustments to the import regulatory policies for the
compressor sector.
Under the newly issued amendment order, two key categories of compressors are
officially exempted from India's mandatory local procurement rules. The exempted
products include fixed-frequency air conditioning compressors with a power rating
below 7,000W, as well as commercial refrigeration compressors above 2TR. With the policy
relaxation, local manufacturers in India are permitted to procure these two types of
compressor products from compliant and qualified global markets, instead of being
restricted to only local domestic suppliers.
The introduction of this regulatory adjustment is targeted at easing the ongoing supply
chain bottlenecks facing India's air conditioning and commercial refrigeration
manufacturing industries. In recent periods, the insufficient local production capacity of
high-quality compressors has constrained the production rhythm of downstream
complete appliance manufacturers, resulting in tight component supply and mounting
operational pressure for enterprises. By opening up global import channels for specific
compressor models, the Indian government intends to effectively make up for the local
capacity gap, smooth the industrial supply chain operation, and provide strong support
for the steady development of the domestic manufacturing industry.
The India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA) has publicly voiced its full approval and
welcome of DPIIT's latest policy revision. Industry insiders commented that the targeted
exemption for low-power fixed-frequency air conditioner compressors and large-tonnage
commercial refrigeration compressors conforms to the actual development needs of
India's current refrigeration and air conditioning market. It not only helps local
manufacturers reduce raw material shortages and production suspension risks, but also is
conducive to stabilizing terminal product prices and ensuring sufficient market supply
amid surging seasonal cooling demand.
Moreover, the extension and relaxation of import restrictions will remain valid until March
2027, offering a stable buffer window for both Indian downstream manufacturers and
global compressor suppliers. International compressor manufacturers with mature
technology and cost advantages will gain broader market access opportunities to expand
layout and export business in the Indian market. Meanwhile, this policy also represents a
balanced layout by the Indian authorities: it guarantees short-term industrial supply
stability while reserving a transition cycle for the long-term localization process of the
compressor industry, striving to strike a balance between opening up imports and
advancing the "Make in India" strategy.
